What is your vehicle?

No I'm not talking about your car. Or your boat.

I'm talking about your vehicle to attain success.

In my last few business interactions I've found myself coming back to this question over and over again in a means to explain what I do and what my vision is both short term and long term.

I believe we all have a vehicle (whether you are aware of it or not.)

For me it has been my creativity and more specifically photography and videography. It started with a passion I developed as a child making short films with my best friends and spawned into an M.F.A., a a Professorship and a range of jobs that has allowed me to take on any and every industry I have the appetite for.

For others your vehicle could be something entirely different. Maybe its basketball. Maybe its dance. Perhaps its your ability to memorize information or your gift of gab. Whatever it is I encourage you to put some gas in your vehicle and let it transport you to your next successful endeavor. I believe each and everyone of us has our own vehicle and it is up to us to identify it, strengthen it, and find ways to pull from it - even if indirectly - to all aspects of our lives, from relationships to careers. As the great football star Vince Lombardi said about his craft, "Football is like life - it requires perseverance, self-denial, hard work, sacrifice, dedication and respect for authority." Here we see Vince taking the skills he learned on the field and applying them to solve real world issues. This is no different as you look about the playing field of entrepreneurialism of present day and see folks of all kinds breaking the norms and social stigmas of an industry allowing them to use their vehicle to become mega crossover successes. Hip hop artists dominating not only on the charts but in the stores selling everything from new fashion to water. Athletes finding a second win post season dabbling as venture capitalists or media moguls with a new approach speaking on the game. What started with a specific skills opened the door for a slew of new opportunities. It is our responsibility to call forth and utilize our gift if we are to truly see the actualization of our full potential. Connectivity - Are you able to create an emotional impact with your audience? The key here is to play to your strengths! Are you funny? Be funny! Are you going for a heartfelt message, go for it - just remember the goal is to be true to your style and engage with your audience. Think, what would I want to see?

 

Celebrity - Become the go to in your industry. Attend events on your topic. Write about it. Share it! Give lectures, volunteer. Whatever you can do to show the world that this is what you are about. Credibility - Is your message received loud and clear. Is it true to who you are. This becomes key as you develop your own brand guidelines and your business has come into its own. You should have a clear consistent tone that is backed by your constant experiences and engagement.
