Every third Friday a magical event comes to San Diego and remind me that we live in one of the most creative cities in the United States and that it is only growing. That event of course is Creative Mornings put on by some of my new friends over at Grizzly where coffee, donuts, and a incredible guest speaker is brought in to wrap about real world issues that face creatives. This months topic is RISK leaad by Sarah Hernhelm.

Come visit and support my colleague and friend Rebecca Webb!

Opening Reception: Saturday, January 16th, 6:00pm - 8:00pm
$5.00 Admission Fee

Sticks of the Sun, Ashes of the Night, centers around the tenuous relationship between young people and the biosphere, alternately documented and authored by the photographic work of artists Rebecca Webb and Jesse Burke.

Burke’s images are derived from a series of road trips taken with his daughter—larks meant to impart his idea of an essential education; one that revolves around appreciation and respect for the vistas they encountered and gestures toward a worldview that encourages her to integrate the complexity of her own interconnectivity.

Webb’s ambivalence toward her adolescent son’s over-reliance on electronic media serves as the impetus to her interrogation into the ostensible dichotomies of technology and nature. Using the technology of the camera, Webb unearths a fabled narrative in which her son’s mediation between these margins opens a gateway to a different kind of intimacy with our tools, our environment, and each other.

Sticks of the Sun, Ashes of the Night asks the viewers to reconceptualize prior notions of what it means to commune with nature, directing focus to the vast, intricate networks of interconnectivity.

This exhibition is sponsored by the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture.

2015 "Celebrating the Art in Archaeology" Art Show!

  • Sun, Nov 1, 2015 4:00 PM 16:00 Mon, Nov 30, 2015 5:00 PM 17:00
  • Google Calendar ICS

This past October-November 2015 I was selected as an exhibiting artist in the San Diego Archaeological Society Art Show entitled, celebrating Art in Archaeology. 2 of my pieces were selected for the show and featured below along with a little more about the show itself.

This archaeology-themed art show was brought to you through the collaboration of the San Diego Archaeological Society (SDCAS) and California State Parks Southern Service Center. SDCAS marks California Archaeology Month every October with the annual Arch in the Park community outreach event. In 2015, SDCAS wanted to add a new event to celebrate Archaeology Month and reach out to the community with the importance of preserving cultural heritage sites in San Diego County. The California State Parks Southern Service Center office is located in the historic Naval Training Center at Liberty Station in San Diego. As part of the arts and culture district, the State Parks office regularly hosts exhibitions of artwork and participates in the Friday Night Liberty gallery open house event. State Parks wanted the October art exhibition and open house to act as an invitation to a wider audience to enjoy the resources California State Parks have to offer. Art and archaeology are inextricably linked. Archaeologists often study the artistic creations of those in the past, whether ancient Grecian mosaics or finely crafted stone tools of pre-contact California. Archaeological sites and past peoples have long served as sources of inspiration for artists working in a variety of mediums. There is considerable artistic skill displayed in hand-drawn archaeological mapping and artifact illustration, and field photos can also be well-composed works of art. Archaeologists, artists and craftspeople engaged in replicative arts recreate clothing, tools, and other objects from the past using traditional materials and techniques. Our exhibition features four categories of artwork to showcase the various ways that art and archaeology meet. Works in the Archaeological Line Drawing category are hand-drawn archaeological illustrations, including artifact illustrations, maps and other line drawings used in archaeology. The Photography category encompasses both archaeological field photography and fine art photography with an archaeological theme, content or subject matter. The Fine Art category includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, and multimedia works with an archaeological theme, content or subject matter. In the Traditional Arts Category, works exhibit the use of traditional materials and/or techniques, including flintknapping, pottery, textile weaving and sewing, basketry, and blacksmithing. The exhibition contains a total of 54 pieces of artwork from 27 different artists and two judges. A diverse mix of San Diego County residents are represented in the show, including professional artists, university students, and cultural resources professionals (archaeologists and those working in related fields). The prizes for the exhibition were awarded by a panel of three judges: Hector Herrera, artist and winner of first prize in the 2015 San Diego Latin American Art Festival; Cindy Stankowski, museum curator and director of the San Diego County Archaeological Center; and James Nelson, a sculptor with many commissioned public sculptures and a background in archaeology. It is our sincere hope that viewers and participants enjoyed their experience in the inaugural “Celebrating the Art in Archaeology” juried exhibition and show. San Diego County Archaeological Society and California State Parks will work towards continuing the collaboration next California Archaeology Month, October 2016.

Thank you to the Archaeological Society for hosting my work and looking forward to exhibiting again in the future!
